Snapping turtle

Chelydra serpentina

Description:

Large tan, brown or gray turtle with a big head and strong jaws. Very long tail has sawtooth like scales along top. Largest turtle in most of its range.

Habitat:

Freshwater habitats; coastal marshes.

Notes:

Eat insects, fish, frogs, snakes, birds, muskrats and many kinds of plants. Hide in muck shallows, under stumps in deep pools or in old muskrat lodges. Females move on land in June to sunny nesting spots. Can be very aggressive when on land if bothered and bite savagely.
