ive heard of these the thick leathery like skin protects them from predators like ants who cant bite through i just cant seem to id it though

Some sort of caterpillar but not sure what species, the oddest caterpillar I've ever seen that's for sure.

Very interesting -where did you find it ? i would love to know what it looked like on the other side- looks like it belongs in the Blattodea family ?
