Common Buckeye

Junonia coenia

Description:

Ran upon a butterfly today in the backyard. Identification should not be too difficult. Common Buckeye (Junonia coenia) markings match between the picture and the guide I own. The guide states that specimens in Florida should be double checked and compared to the other two species, Mangrove Buckeye and Tropical Buckeye. I did and I'm fairly certain my first ID was correct, that it is the Common Buckeye. Analysis of it's markings: Upperside: forewing: Two postbasal orange bands outlined in black 'eyespot' on corner of trailing edge of forewing eyespot is yellow black and blue, beginning on outer circle leading to center two submarginal 'eyespots' on a smaller scale containing only black and blue postmedian yellow band stretches from where large eyespot ends to leading edge of forewing thin yellow median band surrounding inner part of 'eyespot' one orange marginal band right between the large 'eyespot' and the fringe the fringe has a bit of white edge on the hindwing: two large 'eyespots' http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Junonia_coe... http://www.butterfliesandmoths.org/speci...
