Thanks beallburton! The warm weather is pushing everything here too.

I agree this is rue anemone and not bloodroot. I love your spring wildflower photos. Our spring ephemerals in Iowa are all blooming at once with the warm weather, and we've been out searching for them.

I agree, the flowers are similar, although the stamens are not thick or yellow enough. If you compare the leaves with the leaves in my bloodroot spotting you can see that they are different. Sanguinaria canadensis, bloodroot, is a variable species growing from 20–50 centimetres (7.9–20 in) tall, normally with one large, sheath-like basal multi-lobed leaf up to 12 centimetres (4.7 in) across.

I'm pretty sure that's bloodroot. Sometimes the center will be a greenish yellow, or orange-yellow. The petal pattern and count match, as does the interior. The leaves are pretty close.

it does look a lot like bloodroot Shaina, but the leaf shape is different and bloodroot has a yellow center. I did see some bloodroot today http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/986...

This looks like bloodroot, a beautiful plant with some pretty unique properties. If you cut the root in half it will "bleed" red, and it was used by Native north americans to produce dye and also medicianlly. I love this plant though- the flowers are so beautiful and the leaf shape so exquisite.
