Cacatua galerita
An immature sulphur-crested cockatoo looks very much like his parents ( size wise) except for the incessant sounds he makes, moving his head from side to side asking to be fed.
varied.Grasslands, forests, built-up residential areas - they can be seen everywhere but not so much in inner city suburbs
We love this family!! It all started about 18 months go when a raucous rowdy cockatoo brought all his friends to our back yard - nothing was safe; clothes came off pegs, the panels on the outside doors were destroyed...we shooed him away several times for months, then unexpectedly, this rowdy behaviour was replaced by gentle taps on the glass window pane for bird seed. He made sure he did not bring his friends around. About 6 months later he started bringing a friend around fairly regularly and shared the seeds with her - he would not let any other cocky rest anywhere near our backyard. About 2months ago, the two cockys came around with a "pesty" little one. They always stayed around talking to him and now they leave him in our backyard - sort of "day care" and come back around 6 pm to collect him. It is lovely seeing him react to his parents' call. he responds with low "honks". The parents groom and clean him regularly. Pics #1, 2 and 3 were in the morning with one parent and pics #4 & 5 were in the evening on the same day. The little one is much stronger now. He can eat independently although he gets his feeds every now and then. His flight is a lot stronger. Young cockatoos stay with their parents for an indefinite period !. This one has a sooty mark on his head and we hope to have him around for a long time..... It's difficult to tell sexes apart - but we think that this one is a "he" ! http://www.birdworld.com.au/bw_bird_inde...
