Yellow-Necked Caterpillar

Datana ministra

Description:

Black and yellow stripped caterpillar with yellow band behind head.

Habitat:

Feeding on a blueberry bush.

Notes:

Strange to see a mature caterpillar feeding right with young of the same species. This morning I looked at them again. They had worked their way to the end of a denuded branch. Third pic. This afternoon the large caterpillar was feeding on a nearby branch but the small ones were still at the end of the denuded branch.

Nice spotting! I read that there are two to three generations per year hence the two different ages on the one leaf.

Your spotting has been nominated for the Spotting of the Week. The winner will be chosen by the Project Noah Rangers based on a combination of factors including: uniqueness of the shot, status of the organism (for example, rare or endangered), quality of the information provided in the habitat and description sections. There is a subjective element, of course; the spotting with the highest number of Ranger votes is chosen. Congratulations on being nominated!
