A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Buteo jamaicensis
I saw this guy cruising around the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha looking for an easy meal. The second picture is of the same hawk, different tree.
I am adding the Red-Tailed Hawk to the NWF mission due to their exceptionally acute eyesight which would put them firmly into the Super Senses category of the mission.

I would totally agree with that assessment as well. They are some very amazing birds!
;-) I would also argue that the hooked beak and sharp talons of raptors have evolved to kill - and that is not found in any other bird either! That is a very special adaptation, right? I put my raptors in the mix too!
I hadn't thought of that for some reason. I will add him back to the mission with a statement about it. Thanks Christy!
I would argue that a raptor has very acute and enhanced eyesight...they can see up to 4 times that of humans...super sense indeed!! ;-)
Removed from NWF mission with help from KarenL!
Beautiful clear photo with wonderful lighting on the bird!
Tx Karen
Sergio it is a worldwide mission this year! But only for spottings that fit their categories!
Is global now Sergio!
Hi Karen. Is the NWF mission for USA area only?
Hi Komodo! Please can you add in your notes why this belongs in the NWF mission - what makes it extraordinary? As a reminder, the NWF mission is aimed at 5 very specific categories: Wildlife with Innovative Defenses, Record Breakers, Wildlife with Super Senses, Species that Survive in Unusual Habitats, and Wildlife with Special Adaptations.
Thanks! I just happened to notice him out of the corner of my eye when I was at the zoo when I was taking pictures of some uncooperative peacocks!
Nice shots!
Thanks Liam. I was pretty sure but just needed to hear it from someone else first!
Yes, only raptor with that red a tail. (Buteo jamaicensis)
