Northern Jacana

Jacana spinosa

Description:

Wetland bird of about 50cm wingspan. Base colour is brown with a black neck and head, bill is yellow with a white base and the forehead features a yellow wattle. The flight feathers are yellow (picture #2). As an adaptation to its environment, this bird has very long legs and huge claws which allow it to walk over floating vegetation, typical in wetlands.

Habitat:

Found in the wetland reserve "Ciénagas del Fuerte", on the Costa Esmeralda, in Veracruz.
