Himantopus himantopus
Unmistakable bird with black and white plumage and ridiculously long, red legs. Adult has black wings and mantle and white underparts; head shows variable amounts of black. Bill long, needle-like and dark. In flight, shows white on rump and lower back and long, trailing legs.
Favours coastal lagoons and shallow lakes, often where water is brackish; frequently nests besides saltpans. Locally common and widespread summer visitor to suitable habitats, a few overwinter.
Also called common stilt or pied stilt.
