Zoothera lunulata
A medium sized bird about 26cm long with olive-golden brown coloured back with a "bold overall scaly pattern of dark half-moons". The eyes appeared black with white rings and below each eye was a small triangular dark patch. Wing and tail feathers were a patterned olive-brown.
Shady areas, d amp gullies of wet woodlands adn coastal scrubs. This bird was spotted by a creek deep in a gully - tall eucalyptus forest.
This bird seemed to be with a mate but I could not see the other bird. He walked around quietly, blending beautifully amongst the forest floor vegetation and dry bark. He was silent and he hopped away when I tried to get closer. It is said that this species is seldom heard. They nest in large bowl-shaped untidy nests made of fine roots and bark. they are found all along the east coast of Australia and in Tasmania. Another thrilling spotting for me !!
