Redwing

Turdus iliacus

Description:

Not really red-winged, it gets its name from the rosy patches on the sides of its chest (under the wings). The redwing is a winter visitor to the UK, leaving in April, so this one will soon be on its way back to its breeding grounds in northern Europe. A fairly large and noticeable thrush. Often flock with other thrushes.

Habitat:

Usually feed in fields and hedgerows

Notes:

Spotted on the University of Essex campus grounds.
