Mercurial skipper

Proteides mercurius

Description:

This was an exciting find - a first for Project Noah and the first time seen at the N.B.C. in three years I believe. The Mercurial skipper has somewhat elongated forewings that are noticeably different from most other skippers. The top of the head and thorax are a gold color, which is another good ID characteristic. Size: 5.8-7 cm.

Habitat:

Spotted at the National Butterfly Center in Mission, Texas.
