Yes it does have a bit of stem and began a nice purple before a few days past.I will trust that it is Panus rudis and not worry so much about the children touchin' it, now that i have learned that it may be eaten without consequence. Thank you, gully.moy for the ID.

Gee I feel bad,I gave one to my 6 yr old son to play with. It had not stung me when I handled it.Now I've learned that the spikes can break off and sting.
I believed these would sting.Now I know better,thanks for this spotting.

The "W" on the face is the species characteristic of Harmonia axyridis.
