What an awesome find! The darkling beetles I find have less pronounced legs, and let out quite an odor when handled (as this one does as well). I admire the tapering shape, also.
I am unsure how I knew what species this was, the word "elderberry" popped into my mind as soon as I saw the photo! So I looked up the words "red elderberry" and low and behold! I have had no previous encounters with elderberry, and I am not good with botany. So it is a mystery how it all came about.
Anyway, what a beautiful find! Still alarmed at what my brain just did, though.
It is amazing, all of the coat variants from location to location! Over here in central New Jersey, they are uniformly gray. And EXTREMELY common. We seem them every time we go outside.
