Canicularis is a more northern sp. that ranges slightly into the western NC mountains where it is uncommon.

NOT Glover's Silk Moth - H. columbia gloveri comprises all populations to the west ...along the Western Plains, Rockies and Great Basin States (all similar moths/populations occurring in the Great Lakes region and east belong to H. columbia nominate).

This cicada is not only intermediate in appearance, but also belongs to a population occupying the geographic zone (and likely genetic blend zone) between the following 2 subspecies.
