Yes I find this stuff most often on hackberry or ash trees. It's definitely some type of epiphyte.

This thing did the cool click when I moved it off the sidewalk. Crazy cool!!
There is a huge rookery where I work (along with some little blues and snowys) and I pick up a lot of these guys but most I'm able to put back in the nest :)
It looks like it's either coming into adult plumage or molting.
The females don't have horns. Great find! I've always wanted to find a deceased one for my collection jars!
