A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
I know what you mean. I was very fortunate to get this one, but only because I shot it through my window. Otherwise I've only gotten very distant or rushed (poor) photos.
I can't see the side markings very well because of the angle, but it looks like one of the darker, hairier versions of the Salt Marsh (some are light in color, some are dark).
There is not much information about them on the web, but there are a lot of photos. The reference link I provided is my blog post on this fly, which contains photos I've taken of it, plus links to a few websites which have ID photos and at least some information on the species. From what I've read they are about as common in Florida as they are in Texas.
What a coincidence. I saw this bug for the first time today in my front yard on a sunflower plant. I took some pictures but haven't downloaded them yet. I'd be curious to know what it is too. I hope someone knows!
Yeah, me too. I find it rare to have an opportunity to photograph the topside while in flight.
Wow, very nice series
I changed this to a Sulphur-tipped Clubtail. Someone else pointed out to me that mine has the shorter hind legs with the yellow on them which the Plains Clubtail doesn't have. Other than that, they are nearly identical.
