Young cottonmouths in this area always have that distinctive pattern with the light and dark banding, but they darken up as they get older.

It's been sad this spring, I've seen so many road kill snakes and turtles.
Unfortunately no abdomen views, didn't want to get that friendly with him :) I figured it was a fishing spider of sorts, but like you I am not sure of the species.
No, no stinky encounter here. I'm not sure where the mother was, but this little guy looked kind of lonely.
It is a freshwater crayfish. Its hard to say which species of crayfish it is, I'm no good with aquatic inverts. Thanks for the information.
Looking at those two, I believe it is Hesperis matronalis. Thanks for your help.
I feel like it's some sort of phlox, but the flowers only have four petals.
