What's interesting is that this was in Newington, not really a heavy wilderness area

Nope...out walking on kind of a less traveled road and it appeared to be feeding on something literally right off the curb. I initially thought it was a regular cat but stopped for a second look and realized otherwise when it lifted its head and bared it's fangs at me! It was literally only a few feet from me...lucky me!
