yes, the juveniles are mottled brown/white/black.
they dont get the iconic white head and tail feathers until about 2 years of age.

its a very pretty flower. I've see one that looks just like this growing wild in some places in Alaska.

@Heather, I used wikipedia but it took a lot of digging around. I haven't been able to find a good online flower guide yet.

It looks a lot like a blue flag iris. Iris virginica shrevei
but not quite. pretty sure its an iris of some kind.
