Thank you so much for the SOTD! I love finding this slime mold :). If you brush the tops of the stalks, the brown spores puff into the air and look like cocoa dust.

@ Danièle, it definitely resembles chestnut vermicelli!

Thanks! @Tukup - it's totally weird! I have been seeing lots of these cases in the past year or so. I counted over a hundred last autumn!

Thanks Greg, Roy, and Neil! @Neil, I don't carry a mirror. Sometimes I can get a shot of the underside with a wide angle lens, and other times I tip the mushroom to see the gills/pores. The white mushroom is a different species of Amanita.
