Not a tanuki, but a masked palm civet. Had no idea that anything like that could be found in Tokyo.

Is this some kind of mayfly?

About 3cm long - never seen anything like it before.

I believe that this is a ladybug (てんとう虫) in the early stage of life - does anyone know what kind it is?

I managed to get a closer shot of a mejiro - this time in a cherry tree :)

That's interesting to hear. In Japanese this is called a 'mejiro', which means white eye, and the area I spotted it is Mejiro in Tokyo!

Thanks for that information! At least I can get rid of the romanization of the Japanese name.

A Japanese friend ID'd this as a 'shouryou batta' ショウリョウバッタ(精霊蝗虫), with the 'batta' meaning grasshopper. The scientific name is acrida cinerea, but I can't find a common name for it.

Thanks, Argy Bee. As the body is so slender, I didn't even think of it as being a katydid, but more likely a phasmatodea.

Clearly a dragonfly, but what species? I spotted this one in Tokyo.
