I would say the same, I also thought California towhee when I first saw it.
This is actually not an American black duck, it's a domesticated duck that ranges from white to black or even both black and white body, usually with some red wart looking skin on their head and face.

Your're correct, this is a moorhen but to make it a complete spotting you can add the full name: Common moorhen and the scientific name (Gallinula chloropus). Nice photos!
The first photo is indeed a Black-headed Gull (Chroicocephalus ridibundus)
