Are you sure it isn't a rhododendron? I thought pawpaws set fruit further down the stem, not right at the end.

Perhaps one of the "Little Girl" series of hybrid magnolia. There are eight of them -- Ann, Betty, Jane, etc. I believe they typically bloom before the leaves emerge.
