A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
I study Zoology in Nottingham. I love the natural world. I'm a keen amateur photographer and hope to go into wildlife documentary production
Nottingham, UK
This was whilst I was working with the British Trust for Ornithology in Portugal. We mist netted him first thing in the morning, did some checks on the little guy, took some measurements for research purposes and let him go on his merry way
If it helps I can say with about 80% certainty that this guy is in the genus Syrphus.
I will have to respectfully decline this suggestion. I do know that it is a Hover fly, therefore must belong to the Family Syrphidae.
On this lake you can see them all year round usually. More common around this time of year though. Today I saw roughly 5 or 6 of them in total as opposed to the usual 2 or 3 at other times of the year.
what a fantastic shot! I love the way you've brought out the eyes and made it look almost painted, amazing!
This was on my University's lake, nice to be able to see them so clearly as they usually take shelter further into this island that they are pictured on here
Lovely shot
very nice!
