Indeed! I read up on it and wow. She believes there were seeds in her compost. She has little ones so I think she'll be pulling it.

I can't catch them either. This one was caught by my son, who insists he's on a friendly basis with the local lizards. He catches and releases them all the time. I need to devise an experiment so he can learn more.

Thank you, Muckpuk. It could be a slime mold but presently I'm still leaning towards fungus. I've done a little more research and agree with Wilson that it is likely a Calocera sp.

Steve, thank you so much! I must have goofed when I posted this. We observed this on a BLM trail west of Redding, CA. Do you think it is still E. compositus?

Thank you so much, Orbea. You identifications have been very helpful. Sadly, I don't recall which oak this is ... I'll do a better job of noting this in the future. I've only recently learned that the wasps are specific to host species. Thanks again for your help! :)

Love the colors ... guessing it is a lichen of some sort but I am a complete novice when it comes to identification.
