We also have them. They strip my cabbage tree (kiepersol) of all it's leaves. The caterpillars then leave the tree in search of another "victim". This is when you see them on the ground. Fortunately new leaves appear soon so it is not a catastrophy.
In South Africa we also have a tent spider (Cyrtophora). Family: Araneidae; Sub-family: Araneinae; Genus: Cyrtophora
