I would say tree weta due to the fact that you are in the north island, and found him in a suburban environment.
This is a Plumose Anemone :)
It's a Hyacinth! Scientific name Hyacinthus.
Thanks for your help! The largest one was about 5" in diameter. I will keep researching :)
