I couldn't look at the underside of the cap without destroying them, but later when they fell apart naturally I could see that there were in fact gills, the same orange-brown color and they didn't seem widely spaced... Regularly spaced?

Good call Emilie! I'd never heard of that, and I was super curious. I think when I first started looking, everything looked like carrot to me.

Cool!!!! Galls?! You should find out the tree/plant type, then google that plus "galls" so you can find out the likely suspect.

They're poisonous, too, which is why you see them totally abandoned by squirrels...
