I couldn't look at the underside of the cap without destroying them, but later when they fell apart naturally I could see that there were in fact gills, the same orange-brown color and they didn't seem widely spaced... Regularly spaced?

Cool!!!! Galls?! You should find out the tree/plant type, then google that plus "galls" so you can find out the likely suspect.
