Thanks Beaker. I'm sure now that it was a coyote - perhaps even two - because we discovered coyote tracks behind our shed (which is in our backyard and completely fenced in) along with more fur from our cat. What was throwing me was the fact that our yard is fenced it quite securely, though I've since observed coyotes jumping fences on YouTube so I am now a believer. I don't know how one can keep a cat here in Southern California at all, unless you either have a large dog like a shepherd to deter them, or you live in a condo. :(

Thx Cindy - the night hike is once a year that I know of, and you can sign up on the City of Poway website. It's actually led by a renowned entomologist who sets up blacklights on white sheets to attract insects of all varieties, which he then identifies. It's fantastic! Look for it around July. :)

I struggled to ID this one - I didn't think we had the classic Arizona bark scorpions but every pic I checked online looked like this guy! Until I ran across the "Baja California Bark," which apparently used to be lumped in with the Arizona Barks until they realized the California variety are apparently less toxic. Whew! ;)
