Yeah I'm kind of guessing it was planted. No idea who would have done it though. It's kind of tucked out of the way.

I actually just went back and looked again. It is not a pot. It's actually an exposed section of the inner bark of the tree. I agree with you that this is probably an impatiens.

These definitely look like raccoon tracks to me.

I'm not so sure. It doesn't have the characteristic spotting pattern. I'm still going with red salamander.
