Cool! I love these moths, I have photographed two species so far here in PNG.
Thanks for the suggestion Aisse. Is there a way to be sure this is not the juvenile of another species - like the Creamy-bellied Thrush T. amaurochalinus or the Rufous-bellied Thrush T. rufiventris? What are the diagnostics that would distinguish juveniles?
All moth & butterfly photos in Africa can be submitted to LepiMAP which is the African butterfly and moth mapping project. LepiMAP is a project aimed at determining the distribution and conservation priorities of butterflies and moths on the African continent.
LepiMAP is a joint project of the Animal Demography Unit (Department of Biological Sciences, University of Cape Town) and LepSoc - The Lepidopterists' Society of Africa.
To submit records to the LepiMAP database follow this link: http://vmus.adu.org.za/
Very cool indeed!
Thank you for the kind comments all.
Thanks for the ID Lenny.
The bird isn't white though it does appear a little pale. It is definitely a Grey Heron.
Juvenile Tree Martins gets my vote. They have a very young look about them.
The tail is wrong for a Black-headed Trogon. I'm sure this is a female Violaceous Trogon (Trogon violaceus concinnus) or a female Northern Violaceus Trogon (Trogon caligasta) depending on which taxonomy you follow. See the pic at: http://ibc.lynxeds.com/photo/violaceous-...
Depending on your taxonomy: either Trogon caligatus or Trogon violaceus concinnus.
