It was much larger than a paper wasp though I forget the exact length.

Yeah, you often find them around the periphery of a females hideout.

I've seen something similar to this before. This creature attaches by the head and the mature adult exits, leaving a strange looking little husk behind.

That's cool looking spider. The males around here look very similar to that.
