They are 6-8 inches across and most stick up above the water about a foot.

My husband and I paddled our canoe across Rend Lake to the bird sanctuary and found tons of these beauties in a sheltered cove there.

Actually, they are quite non-aggressive,thankfully! They prefer to run and hide and be still, hence the name "recluse".
