Jimmie Assassin Bug
Assassin Bug commented on by Jimmie Hominy, Oklahoma, USA6 years ago

Found this particular specimen on the edge of our pool. In the following days after the spotting, I saw several more near the house. We did not see these last year, or any previous year near the pool, or near the house.

The full body shot of the insect was taken as it walked along the edge of the pool. The featured headshot, I felt, gave the impression of some sort of attitude or personality. It also shows detail of the rostrum, which is used for feeding, and in some species, ejecting a spray of venom if provoked.

Thanks for the heads up about the Oklahoma specific mission, Goody, I have added it to that mission, and will add some of the others to it as I get time!

Thanks! This one was also accompanied by a juvenile, but it had flown away by the time I got in position to get the shot.

This bird in particular is kept in the Tulsa Zoo's rainforest building. She has quite the personality!

Jimmie Lesser Black-backed Gull

If they are going to be classified, they might as well be classified right! So sometimes a little arguing is a good thing!

Even though I suggested the Great Black-backed Gull, I tend to agree with the speculation in your notes that it is the Lesser. After posting, I noticed that the legs were still not right to be the Greater.
Great spotting, in any case! :^)
