A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
I would have said yes if it was in a garden, but these were growing wild. They were nearing 2 feet tall where they were growing.
Great photo. Well, you will have lots of little ones to eat up all those cicadas we are supposed to get in abundance this year.
When you told me about this spotting, I tried to find it in my mushroom guide. No go. Glad I finally got to see what this looked like. It is bizarre
Love seeing birds from other parts of the world.
Very pretty birds.
beautiful color
Great series of pennants
I will accept Rob's suggestion for a few reasons. The size of the bird is larger than a finch. After scrutinizing the beaks, the cowbird is longer than the finch. The finch is more triangular. We have breeding cowbirds in our yard which is another reason. Also, the nostril on the beak is raised rather than even where it is attached, common in cowbirds.
It may be a finch. Usually the female has more streaking on the face, but I have never seen one in molt. Anyway, this is one ugly bird. Keep the suggestions coming.
