photographing and learning about wildlife
From USA, live in Costa Rica. My most favorite past-time is walking through the jungle & discovering strange plants, animals, and bugs.

Thank you, WilliamsFamily,
It is the best photo I have seen of these creatures. I looked them up so I could find what the heck I was looking at and all the images of them did not have the brilliant colors of the one's I have found.
Since these were a delicacy I tried to hide where I found these exactly.
I am glad you enjoyed my photos. Take care.
Thank you all for your comments. I looked it up and you are correct so I am going to edit and add the correct info.
The author of a wildlife book I am reading said there is a folklore told in some parts of Costa Rica that if a girl is stung by a Machaca (local name for this bug), she will die within 24 hours unless she sleeps with her boyfriend....not too hard to figure out who made this up ....lol.
Boys are ever so clever with their countless ways to trick a girl to be able to bed them, huh? But yet they can never seem to pick up the right items at the supermarket...lol (just kidding)
Great spotting...my book only showed a hand-drawn image of this stunning creature, I had no idea how gorgeous and BIG it would be.
I also read they give off a stick-bomb of sorts if they are disturbed.
Anyways, thanks for posting!!
Hi Gaiea, Cool huh? I didnt have my camera when I first saw them and had to run a mile, round trip to get it. But worth it. I had no idea they were edible and very expensive, people risk their lives to get at them as they are usually not laying on a beach but beneath the water on large rocks. I threw them back and hope they found a new home safe from 'the people'..lol.
Congrats on the Spotting of the Day. Very cool. Hope I run across these bugs while I am here in Costa Rica.
very cool animal. thanks you for the pictures!!
Beautiful pictures...so sweet looking.
Eucalyptus makes a great essential oil, excellent for steam baths and clearing out the lungs and sinus when one is sick. thank you for posting!
