Sorry it's taken me forever to get back to you! They are eating the pine seeds inside the pine cone. They peel the outer part of the cone off to get at the nuts. :)

Apparently, you can make purple ink with the berries when they are ripe.

Thanks! I was on my first Field Expedition last summer in Baja, Mexico for my Global Field Program Master's Degree through Miami University in Ohio. We got to snorkel with it. It was awesome! thanks for the welcome. I can't wait to show this site to my fourth graders!
