Thank you to everyone who has commented. The small mammal went back into the woods and we haven't seen it again. ill be keeping a lookout for it.

The tobacco hornworm larva (Manduca sexta) is generally green with seven diagonal white lines on the sides and a curved red horn. The tomato hornworm has a black horn which is why I think this is the Manduca quinquemaculata.

I think this is interesting because I like the way the case looks like a log cabin made of sticks.
