A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
I have a fine arts background in textiles (hand painted and printed fabrics mostly) and picked up photography about 2.5 years ago. I got into birds via my camera and am still learning to ID them. I have a couple of neighbors who are avid birders, so that helps with the ID factor. One of them put up a nesting box in the park when the City cut down the limb that they used to nest in. I have some nice albums on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/melanie.hofmann
I posted a slideshow of the babies and Mama. No sound.
I do have a series. I will post some more. We had a nest here last year, but not this year.
Costa's have a more purple gorget. Maybe your monitor shows more of that color than the magenta on mine? They are very similar.
Are you local? We live in Berkeley. I took some photos of the recent sculpture exhibit that are posted on my facebook page. Feel free to friend me!
I am not sure. If you give me a better ID on the blue one, I'll post a correction. It was my best guess from looking at pictures online.
Emma: Yes, this is an Anna's hummingbird.
They are faster and harder to photograph than our native Anna's. I have gotten quite a few good shots at this point, but I have had lots of misses too. There is a lovely fountain at a regional park where it is easier to photograph them. I'll post some of those too.
