Desmond, that was blood. The poor guy had been hit by a car, and I think his head got hit. Not too badly though, since he was very much alive. I think his jaw was broken though (or something) because he was pretending to strike at us when we moved him with the pole, but he never opened his mouth. You can see blood on the road as well.

Thanks so much everyone! I remember this being such a perfect day for photos. The birds and alligators were active, the temperature was perfect, and there was a nice cloud cover to prevent over-saturation. It was the trifecta!
