Good eye Jeannette, the males have "wattles", like many species of birds, an example that most of us are familiar with is the common rooster who's "crown and comb" is very apparent. The "wattles" on the Ptarmigan are quite inconspicuous. See the following link; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wattle_(ana...)
