Es silente en vuelo, pero hace sonidos varios en su nido.

Come principalmente peces, y también ataca a otras aves marinas para forzarlas a regurgitar su comida. Nunca acuatiza, siempre captura sus presas en vuelo.

Debido a lo corto de sus patas, esta ave duerme en lugares altos lo que le facilita emprender vuelo. De aterrizar en nivel bajo le sería casi imposible emprender vuelo.

La serpiente coral es un animal muy poco dado a dejarse ver y por lo general solo muerde a los humanos si la pisan o tratan de cogerla. Además, como para inyectar todo el veneno a su víctima debe masticar, literalmente, a ésta, la mayoría de las mordeduras a humanos no son mortales.

Hygrocybe miniata is a cosmopolitan species, having been recorded in most of the temperate zones. It has been collected from Britain, Europe, America.
In Britain it appears in autumn (fall), particularly in frost free periods, and prefers sandy heaths, grassy clearings, or unimproved fields.

In Australia, it can be found in temperate to subtropical rainforest and eucalypt forest.
