It seems to be one of the mantids in the Creobroter genus. I'm not sure which, though. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creobroter

Cool, thanks! Probably a green darner nymph, then. We have quite a few of the adults around right now, but they're so hard to photograph.

Thanks! Yeah, they're definitely mites. Apparently that's pretty common with water scorpions. I didn't even think of it.

A brown thrasher, possibly? Hard to tell with that much damage, but that would be my guess.

We do have a garden, but it's fenced off, and they never really come that close to the house. Probably because of the dogs. We've always been able to coexist pretty well with the local wildlife.

I think the biggest difference is where they're found. I couldn't find a good range map, but it seems that occidentalis is only seen in the west.
