The spider moved so that we could see the ventral view in daylight. We saw the four spots that are characteristic of a barn spider. Neoscona crucifera.

Thanks! I believe you are correct. I think it is a male Carolina wolf spider, our state spider. It was definitely less than an inch and the males are smaller. Thanks for your help!
