In northern Colorado you'll hear them be called a Bullsnake. But they are the same thing as a Gopher Snake.
I know what you mean, I only have a handful of Pyrrhuloxia photos myself... Can be tricky to spot. Though I think I found a great location because I continued to see them several times during my hike.

Perhaps, an American Toad. The Parotid gland sits further back and does not touch the cranial crest. If it did it would likely be a Fowler's Toad. Just a suggestion though.
