In the all about birds harrier link, from Jellis, the light morph rough-legged hawk is listed as a similar species . I think that's what this is, though it's hard to tell from the picture they provide.

Actually, Ashley, after a little searching and comparing, it does look very much like a female Western Tanager! And, we DO have residents around here. So, I'm leaning towards it being a WT, but I'd like a second opinion before I'm sure. Thank you for the suggestion!

Aha! I have never seen nor heard that about White-crowns before. I have lots of pictures of juvenile W-c.s, but they're all more than 20 days old, evidently! Thank you very much, Ashley!!
