The national Aviary here in Pittsburgh has a pair of these birds. You are lucky to be able to see them in the wild. Glad to hear the locals have stopped eating them.

Definitely a monarch butterfly caterpillar.
There were several dozen along the side of the path I was walking on. These creatures are very small, as you can see the head of a nail in the post that this bug was placed on to get a good picture.
That looks like a copperhead to me.
