Looks like the larva stage of a beetle. The larvae is often far more hideous than the beetle. Even ladybug larvae is creepy.

Definitely a weevil - but bugguide.net will not show it since they only cover bugs in North America.

Hmm... as I re-look at the photos (#3 & #5), I am seeing segmenting there. Interesting... but still no mandibles!

Thanks for the ID suggestions & comments. I agree that it's genus Ammophila - but because of the lack of mandibles (possibly a gender characteristic?) and lack of segmenting in the abdomen, I don't think it's a match for Ammophila procera - although it's gotta be a 1st cousin. :)

Fifth photo shows my thumb for scale. It was a very small insect. Possibly a member of the fly family?

No this is not an ant. It has 8 legs. It's a spidering.
