A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Hello Leuba: Other than the shape of the antennae it looks similar to "D" in your reference web site. Now I wish that I had taken a picture of the insect's mouth parts.
Thank you bayucca for the ID. 05.13.2015
Excellent reference links. Note that one of the photos of this same insect was taken in Rio Bigal which is also in the vicinity of Sumaco Volcano.
Hello Vivy: This particular earthworm was captured and released. The U of Iowa and Universidad Catolica (Quito) are collaborating on a study of these giant Sumaco earthworms.
Albert: So noted. Corrections appreciated and 'spotting' has been updated.
Hello TonyMandile: I took this photograph with my Canon point & shoot camera. It is not a hoax or a Photoshop rendition. The photo has not been altered in any manner. Sorry, but you are just wrong. You are invited to contact me directly. This is the real thing.
Hello HarmitSarai: In my "description" on Project Noah I indicated that it was "..greater than 500 grams". And, it certainly was greater than 500 grams. However, I did not have a scale with me and did not want to exaggerate the worm's weight.
Dr Csuzdi, I presume. Hello again; good to hear from you. I sent you this picture and we communicated about this critter a couple of years ago. Unfortunately, we have not found another one quite this large or of this same specie. Many smaller (~300 grams) earthworms that are dark grey/black; but none like this unique animal.
Hello bayucca: I would agree with your suggestion that it is Anadenobolus sp. My photograph was taken in the same area of Volcano Sumaco in the community of Pacto Sumaco just up the road from Wild Sumaco. The entire region is a largely unexplored paradise of incredible biodiversity. Re: Swiss Cross on knife. Yes, of course.
OK. I made the change. 1st & 2nd picture are switched. 1st picture is now the defensive position for this katydid.
To all of the Proj Noah folks who have responded to my request; many thanks. Keep the info flowing. It is very helpful. Hoppy4840
